St. Luke’s Xeriscape Transformation Project
A Community-Driven Native Landscape and Contemplative Garden
Where Community and Nature Thrive
At Blue Spruce Horticulture, we are delighted to unveil St. Luke’s Episcopal Church xeriscape transformation in Fort Collins, a landmark public works project that underscores our commitment to creating sustainable outdoor spaces. This project exemplifies our dedication to enhancing community spaces through innovative landscape design and meticulous installation that supports local ecosystems and wildlife.
Adding to the serene ambiance of St. Luke’s is a beautifully designed water-wise landscape. This element not only enhances the visual appeal of the space but also creates a changed environment, inviting visitors to unwind and enjoy the soothing sounds of nature. Complementing this is a dedicated contemplative garden, which takes a pivotal role in supporting local ecosystems. By attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, this garden promotes biodiversity and demonstrates our commitment to sustainable, nature-serving principles.

Creating Contemplative Spaces
Dense native gardens are strategically layered throughout the area, facilitating pollinator habitat and offering immersive experiences for all who visit. We have integrated rain gardens and a contemplative labyrinth through collaborative community-driven design, providing sacred and functional gathering spaces that create a harmonious outdoor sanctuary at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Project Highlights:
- 40,000 sq ft turf-to-xeriscape conversion with native plantings, rain gardens, and perennials
- Pollinator haven supporting local ecosystems (hawk spotted first week after installation)
- Community features: contemplative labyrinth, children’s play area, accessible walkways
- Phase 1 completed Fall 2025, 5-year implementation timeline
- $111,000 in grant funding secured from City of Fort Collins and Northern Water
A Living Sanctuary
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church xeriscape is not just an outdoor space. It is a vibrant community asset for nature and people alike. Through intentional design, we’ve created a 40,000 square foot turf conversion that encourages environmental stewardship and community interaction, offering a canvas for celebrating biodiversity. The accessible walkways and contemplative labyrinth allow Blue Spruce Horticulture’s expertise in creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also ecologically beneficial and educationally enriching.

Enhancing Community Learning
Central to St. Luke’s vision is creating nature in the city through water-wise design and creation care stewardship. The project replaces water-hungry turfgrass with native trees, serviceberry and currant bushes that produce fruit for wildlife and human use, and educational signage throughout.
