Ranger Drive Xeric Meadow Transformation
A Low-Water Native Landscape with Buffalo Grass and Perennial Meadows
Where Low-Maintenance Meets Beauty
At Blue Spruce Horticulture, we are delighted to unveil the Ranger Drive project in Northern Colorado, a residential landscape that transforms water-hungry Kentucky bluegrass into a thriving xeric garden. This project exemplifies our dedication to creating outdoor spaces that balance low-maintenance living with stunning visual impact through strategic design and sustainable installation.
The existing turf edging was thoughtfully preserved, and the large backyard was divided into three distinct sections. The central area was converted to native buffalo grass lawn, providing a soft groundcover with minimal water needs. The two surrounding sections feature low-water meadow style plantings that create dynamic seasonal interest while requiring little to no irrigation. Complementing this is a biodiverse perennial palette, which takes a pivotal role in supporting local ecosystems. By attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, this garden promotes biodiversity and demonstrates our commitment to sustainable, water-saving principles.

Creating Meadow Spaces
Simple gravel pathways are strategically placed throughout the areas, facilitating easy access for homeowners. We used a cost-effective spray-kill method for the existing turf, then planted new perennial species directly into the dead turfgrass base. This approach blends naturally into the landscape while providing practical functionality, creating a harmonious outdoor space at Ranger Drive.

A Living Landscape and Garden
The garden at Ranger Drive is not just an outdoor space. It is a vibrant private sanctuary for pollinators and homeowners alike. Through intentional design, we’ve created a thoughtful transformation that encourages environmental stewardship and water conservation while offering a beautiful, evolving landscape. The meadow plantings and buffalo grass allow Blue Spruce Horticulture’s expertise in creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also ecologically beneficial and exceptionally low-maintenance.
Enhancing Sustainable Living
Central to this design is converting high-water lawns to xeric gardens that thrive with minimal care. The landscape has flourished over several seasons, requiring nothing more than an annual spring cutback and virtually no supplemental irrigation.
